“I never thought I could study a Business degree at SERC.” This was the view of local girl Ruth Godfrey who is currently on the third year of the BA Business Studies degree at South Eastern Regional College (SERC). Studying for her A levels and considering her future study opportunities Ruth aspired to study a degree level qualification but had reservations about going to university and being saddled with debts from student loans, accommodation, travel and tuition fees.
It was during a visit to a careers convention that Ruth spoke to SERC Business studies lecturer Philip Turner who told her about the Business Studies degree course at the College. The degree, delivered by SERC, is accredited by Liverpool John Moore’s University.
Ruth went on to say; “I always wanted to gain a degree however I was reluctant to go to university as the expense of living away from home would have been too much. I was delighted to find out that I could study for a Business degree accredited by Liverpool John Moore’s University at SERC. I’m currently in the third and final year of my course and it has gone really well. I have recently returned from a study trip in Italy which was very insightful and great fun.”
The Business degree at SERC has many benefits to students including, cheaper course fees, smaller class sizes allowing for one-to-one tuition, access to a range of online resources from SERC and Liverpool John Moore’s University and best of all, student’s can enrol on the course without going through UCAS, meaning if you have missed the UCAS deadline or have used all your options you can still enrol through the College. Student’s can study on a full-time or part-time basis allowing for flexibility for those currently in employment but who would like to further their education.
Philip Turner, Course Director for the BA Business Studies degree at SERC had this to say; “This is a unique opportunity to study in Northern Ireland for a degree which is validated by Liverpool John Moore’s University. The complete degree is delivered by SERC as a Liverpool John Moore’s Partner College and our degree students are enrolled as students of John Moore’s University. Our fees are less than half those charged by universities in mainland England. We operate separately from UCAS and therefore choosing to study with us does not take up one of the student’s UCAS choices. In fact, we can be regarded as an extra choice for students.”
