The Project
Training and Up-Skilling Staff
The Brief
SERC had been providing Bombardier with a number of tailored, 5 day specialist training courses in the areas of Programmable Logic Controllers, Pneumatics and Hydraulics. Feedback from Bombardier staff and management was excellent and the project was then expanded.
The Solution
In January 2010 Bombardier, with the help of SERC, assessed and selected a group of suitable candidates to complete a tailored engineering qualification to provide Bombardier staff with a recognised national qualification to support career progression within the company.
The selected candidates study a National Certificate in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, with specialist practical modules and an NVQ Level 2 in Performing Engineering Operations. Upon completion of the NVQ Level 2 course, candidates will then be monitored for eight weeks in the factory environment by SERC and Bombardier staff before returning to the College to complete the final part of the National Certificate qualification. This process provides a structured approach to work-based learning where employees can transfer classroom learning to an industrial environment.
The Outcome
Feedback received from Bombardier and SERC lecturing staff has been extremely positive with everyone in agreement that there is notable improvement in the skill sets of employees who have completed training. The objective now is to develop a five-year training plan that will continue the training partnership and reskill further employees.
