Information for Parents

Be assured that your child is in good hands. Our team of experts in areas like financial support, learning support, counselling and SERC Extra are all here to ensure that students can address any difficulties that face them. We want to ensure that they have no barriers to successfully completing their course.

We're Helping Students 'Get the Edge'

With increasing unemployment levels amongst 16 to 25 year olds SERC is dedicated to providing a service, beyond the qualification, which is designed to help your son/daughter to be job ready; to get 'the edge'

We help students to develop their ‘Edge’ by giving them as many opportunities as we can to gain better skills and real life experiences. This can make all the difference when applying for jobs or higher education courses in the future. This includes the chance to be involved in setting up and running a commercial SERC Student Company and working on ‘real life’ industry projects from businesses like Coca Cola and Randox and gain work placements or experience in a range of local companies.

SERC is your local college and we work hard to deliver value for money for you. Our performance in key areas of student retention, achievement and success are the highest in the sector; high levels of our students move on to further or higher education or into employment and we save hundreds of thousands of public money each year by keeping students on courses.

Careers Guidance

To assist parents in helping their children make the decision about what their next step should be regarding their education and training, we have launched a Careers Centre filled with lots of useful information and resources for you and your child.

Parents' Forum

We would like you to be involved in the work of the college. The Parents Forum has been established for regular updates as well as our annual briefings in October. You will have the chance to tell us what you would like to see from SERC and how we can improve.

If you want to get involved in the Parents Forum please email parentsforum@serc.ac.uk

Comment from Parent:

'What does my child do if they are struggling with their course, is there any additional support available for them'

Response from SERC:

Yes support is available to all our students who feel they need extra help on their course.  The first thing your child should do is speak to their class tutor, to see if they can provide any assistance to them.

If the reason they are struggling can not be worked out with the tutor your child should contact SERC Extra.  A SERC Extra member of staff is located at each of our main campuses, they will talk to them and will be able to signpost them to other services, including learning support, which can provide additional support for them as they study.
