South Eastern Regional College (SERC) Business Studies student Nathan Smyth was also recognised at the Awards when he picked up “Best Business Plan” for his entrepreneurial idea of a “Games Console Arcade” which specialises on three key games consoles: Xbox 360, PS3 and Nintendo Wii.
Nathan, who hails from Ballynahinch, took his inspiration from the recent all night queues for game releases highlighting the high levels of demand for such products, yet there is still a level of purchase anxiety attached as games are high cost items. This would give clients an opportunity to experience games before buying and also be a hub for family and friends to meet up and play together.
Her idea “Got Guts?” is an ongoing film “festival” where members pay to watch or submit locally made indie productions. Young members of society are encouraged to make and submit their own short films and watch those of others. Membership also includes access to mentoring from experienced film makers. Film nights would take place in local locations such as the College or the local Leisure Centre.
This is a creative concept whose work could be used to attract funding from various sources, in addition to self funding movie nights. Income could also be derived from advertising, sponsorship and other forms of promotion.
The Dermot Curran Young Achiever Awards are designed to recognise outstanding individuals who have demonstrated the entrepreneurial spirit and determination needed to achieve success in the world of business and specifically to recognise the contribution made by young people.
The Awards also addresses the need to acknowledge and encourage young people who have contributed to the economic development of the district and, through a cash award, enables them to develop their business skills.
This Award was inaugurated in 2004 in recognition of Councilor Dermot Curran’s 30-year continuous commitment to public service. During this time Dermot has unfailingly sought to promote the economic development of Down District, and to support the involvement of young people in business and enterprise.
