Colleges in Northern Ireland have come together to launch an initiative aimed at getting more people to study Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics – called the STEM subjects.
This exciting new initiative also includes a tie-in with US media giant CBS.
The Colleges will use the CBS CSI brand to promote the College STEM Initiative to encourage more people to study Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and also develop an awareness of the exciting and rewarding career opportunities available in these areas.
The College STEM Initiative – CSI – will be launched on May 1 in W5 at the Odyssey.
Announcing details of the CSI launch, Colleges Northern Ireland Chief Executive John D’Arcy has said that the imitative will develop stronger links between schools, colleges, universities and local businesses and industry.
Mr D’Arcy said: “Children love questions and they also love doing things and seeing what happens. The difficult job is to turn that excitement into a love of discovery.
“In the world where tomorrow jobs will require new skills based on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, it means we need to get more people interested in STEM subjects and to understand the importance of STEM not just for career prospects or the economy but to enable people to understand the ever changing world.
“The College STEM Initiative – CSI – is about encouraging more people to study Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and also develop an awareness of the exciting and rewarding career opportunities available.
“CSI is about creating opportunities for schoolchildren to experience the wonder of investigation; and building two-way pathways between schools, colleges, universities and businesses and industry. It is about opening up a world of opportunity and exploration.
“While government and industry have identified STEM subjects as vital to the future of our economy – the truth is that as the world changes so are the skills that people need to understand it and to carve out their own future.
“Our Colleges are committed to promoting Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths for the future of Northern Ireland’s economy. This means that we also need to understand why young people opt out of studying STEM subjects – and work to bring them back into contact with Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths. We need to keep alive the passion of our children for investigation.”
