South Eastern Regional College (SERC) has launched a campaign to recruit more industry experts as part-time lecturers to keep their curriculum up-to-date and to include businesses in the learning experience. Candidates will be helped to make the transition to lecturing with a Lecturer Education and Assessment Development Programme. Opportunities exist in a range of areas including IT, engineering, science, catering and healthcare.
Paul Smyth, Head of Human Resources at SERC said: “We are keen to keep our curriculum up-to-date and to ensure that we can respond quickly to industry needs, and employing the right people is critical to this. Lecturers are required to teach people of all ages and backgrounds, mentor student and commercial projects and liaise with businesses. We require flexibility in terms of availability, including day and evening as well as throughout the holiday periods.
This is a unique opportunity for people who may have been recently made redundant and who are keen to get back to work. This is a chance for them to share their experience and knowledge with others. Equally those who may be on reduced hours could consider lecturing to earn more.”
Lecturers need to be able to share their knowledge and skills with others in an inspiring way. As part of a 1200 strong SERC team, they need to be focused on delivering practical solutions, be responsive to customer needs, have a desire to be the best and be a strong team player.
One part-time lecturer, Simon Grant helped SERC become recognised by the International Association of Bookkeepers (IAB) as the ‘Top College’ in the UK for the IAB Computerised Payroll qualification. One of his students, Lianne Larmour, was awarded the ‘Top Student’ accolade at the same time.
