South Eastern Regional College (SERC) has been named the joint winner of the prestigious “General Further Education” category at the second annual Next Generation Learning Awards. These awards from Becta, the government agency for technology in learning, aim to reward technological excellence in the Further Education and Skills sector. They celebrate the very best practice across the country and are one of the most important and respected awards in the sector’s calendar.

Now in their second year, the awards identify and reward organisations throughout the UK that use technology in outstanding or innovative ways for the benefit of learners, communities and local employers. SERC beat off fierce competition from across the UK to win the “General Further Education” Award in recognition for its inspiring use of technology to excite and encourage learning in this important sector.

As the winner of the “General Further Education” Award, SERC is a fantastic example of how technology can support and improve learning and training. Technology can play a vital role in improving the learning that people do - whether formal or informal, work-related or for leisure and SERC is a leader in their field in using technology in a productive and positive way.

Stephen Crowne, Chief Executive of Becta, said: “The Next Generation Learning Awards highlight the impressive use of technology in the FE and Skills sector. The accolades are an important opportunity to recognise and reward organisations that are using ICT in creative and innovative ways to benefit and inspire learners.

“This has never been more important. Our world is becoming increasingly technological, making it imperative that today’s students are equipped with the necessary skills to compete in tomorrow’s digital environment. The award winners will provide inspiration for other FE and Skills providers to use technology and help prepare everyone for the future”.

On winning the award, Dr Michael Malone, Director of Curriculum and Information Services at South Eastern Regional College, said: “We are thrilled to receive this award as acknowledgement for all the work done by everyone involved at SERC. We are incredibly proud of our work and to have it recognised in a national awards scheme is a fantastic boost to all involved.”

“It has only been through the hard work and commitment of those involved that we have been able to achieve this award, and I believe that the skills that our staff has attained through this process will ensure the future success of the College.”
