John McAnally

 VQ Learner of the Year

John McAnally’s determination to turn redundancy into an opportunity to become his own boss has received ministerial approval.

John McAnally was named NI Learner of the Year (24 years and under) at the UK-wide Vocational Qualifications (VQ) Awards. Studying at South Eastern Regional College (Lisburn), he achieved NVQ Level 3 and Advanced Technical Certificate in Plant Maintenance.  In winning this award John beat off stiff competition, most notably from fellow SERC student Sarah Ryan who studies Hospitality at the College and was a finalist in the NI Learner of the Year category.

Speaking at the ceremony Employment and Learning Minister, Sir Reg Empey, said: "Vocational qualifications can transform peoples ' lives, both in terms of their career prospects and their own personal development. John should be immensely proud of his achievements and I congratulate him on winning this award.

"Today's event highlights the importance of learning and celebrates the achievements of learners. All the finalists are an inspiration to those considering following a vocational course, and I commend their achievements to everyone who has a stake in our drive to raise skills levels in Northern Ireland."

John is now a contractor in high demand throughout Ireland, using specialised equipment to remove seized components, gaining a reputation as a highly- skilled, efficient and competent plant mechanic.

Marcus Walker Course Co-Ordinator for Plant Maintenance at SERC commented; “John is an outstanding plant mechanic.  He trained with TBF Thompson while attending the Lisburn Campus of SERC.  Throughout his time on the course John displayed outstanding manual dexterity and highly developed fault diagnosis skills.  John is well-motivated and highly driven – he recognised the importance of formal qualifications to support his incredible natural ability.”

The Awards, organised in Northern Ireland by the Department for Employment and Learning, celebrate the achievement of the millions of people, of all ages, who gain a vocational qualification every year. Over 4 million vocational qualifications were awarded across the UK last year.
