Level 3 Diploma in Theatrical. Special Effects and Hair and Media Make-Up

This 1 year course has been specifically designed to develop your practical skills to an advanced level through a variety of techniques.

Course Overview
This 1 year course has an emphasis on developing your practical skills to an advanced level through a variety of techniques within the theatrical and performing arts sector.
 
Modules studied may include:
 
  • Media, special effects and camouflage make-up,
  • How to apply ready-made small prosthetic pieces and bald caps,
  • Design and apply face and body art,
  • Media make-up,
  • Styling and dressing hair,
  • Style and fit a postiche
  • How to apply the complex skill of airbrush make-up.

You will be required to attend at least 6 SERC arranged external events throughout the year.  This will help you gain experience and links within the industry.

 

You will also work towards a Personal Development qualification and will be involved in a range of activities, designed to improve your employability. 

Entry Requirements

Applicants will need to be 18 years or over and should hold a Level 2 Diploma in a related subject (Art, photography, media, hairdressing or beauty) or 4 GCSE’s  - Maths and English at Grade C or above or equivalent e.g. Essentials Skills. 

Applicants under 18 are welcome to apply if they have previously completed the VTCT Level 2 Hair & Media make up course.

You will be required to complete Essential Skills in Literacy, Numeracy and ICT if you do not have a GCSE grade C in English or Maths or ICT. 

The interview process will involve an interview and skills test. Prior to the interview you will need to produce a portfolio of 10 sample photographs to represent your current make up skills. The outcomes of which, along with the required grades, will determine your successful entry to this programme. 

Please note that if the course is oversubscribed additional criteria will be applied.

Where will it take me?
Successful completion of this qualification may lead directly into employment as a make-up artist in the media, fashion, theatre, performing arts, or photographic industries or as a platform to Higher Education courses.
 
The purpose of this qualification is to develop your skills as a professional make-up artist working with performers to a high level of occupational ability, to enable you to provide hair and make-up services in the media, theatre, performing arts, fashion and photographic industries.  It can also be a good platform for further learning.

How will I be assessed and given feedback?
This course is assessed and verified by centre staff.  Work will be set to improve your practical skills, knowledge and understanding.  For practical elements, you will be observed by your assessor.  All your work must be collected in a portfolio of evidence and cross-referenced.  We have an internal verifier whose role is to check that your assessment and evidence is valid and reliable and meets VTCT and regulatory requirements.  An external verifier, appointed by VTCT, will visit your centre to sample and quality-check assessments, the internal verification process and the evidence gathered.  You may be asked to attend on a different day from usual if requested by the external verifier.
Additional Costs

Students on this course are required to wear a uniform which consists of a SERC hoodie and tshirt.  

One or other must be worn at events so that they are easily distinguished between other students. 

The hoodies are £25 and tshirts are £15

Students will also need to purchase their own specialist make up kit - price is approx. £350 but details will be confirmed within the first week.
