The BSc (Hons) in Cyber Security and Digital Forensics is aimed at meeting the local demand of Cyber Security experts in Northern Ireland. It will cover a range of computing specialisms allowing successful students to follow different career paths.

Course Structure

The BSc (Hons) consists of 80 credits of module material, 40 in each semester.  You will also complete a 40-credit dissertation module in a project of your choice across the 2 semesters.  You must attain 120 credits to achieve the qualification.

Contact Hours

Contact Hours per Week

15 hours' contact time to include practical classes, lectures, workshops or tutorials.

Mandatory Additional Study

Maximum of 3 hours per week average over the academic year.

Personal Study

19 hours maximum studying and preparing assessments in your own time per week, including use of online materials.

Entry Requirements

GCSE English

  • GCSE English Language Grade C or above or Pass in Level 2 Essential Skills Literacy

GCSE Maths

  • GCSE Mathematics Grade C or above or Pass in Level 2 Essential Skills Numeracy

2 Additional GCSE’s

  • In addition to Maths and English, two additional GCSE’s at Grade C or above are required

Level 5

  • Foundation Degree in a Computing related discipline with a pass mark of 55% or above   
  • Pearson Higher National Diploma in a Computing related discipline grade merit or above
  • Candidates presenting with Foundation Degrees or Higher Nationals or other Level 5 qualification from other awarding bodies will be considered under APEL procedures.

Maths

  • Applicants must hold a Level 4 Maths module or higher from a related discipline. Other disciplines will be considered on a case-by-case basis. 

 

Admissions

  • Successful completion of the Admissions Process
  • Students who have not studied the FD in Cyber Security and Digital Forensics at SERC must undertake the Cisco CyberOps Associate course materials provided by the college as background knowledge for entry prior to the course start date. There is no requirement for students to complete assessment of the learning.   

APEL

  • Provide evidence of ability to undertake the programme by meeting the requirements for the accreditation of prior experiential learning. Further details on APEL can be found in the Admissions Section of our website

How will I be assessed and given feedback?
Students are assessed using a range of different methods. These include examinations, coursework, project-based learning, presentations, practical, posters, leaflets, role-play, and case studies. This is dependent on the requirements of each unit of study. Oral, written and online feedback will be provided during your course to help improve and monitor performance.

Successful completion of this course could lead to a career in the computing industry.

The course provides the opportunity to develop real-life experience and practical skills that employers want.

You will learn transferable skills such as communication, organisational skills, problem solving and critical thinking which will help you to apply for relevant jobs within the computing industry. The programme is designed to facilitate your development of a range of graduate qualities that are highly valued in the workplace. 

Additional Costs
There is an additional cost of £150 for access to industry material for the Ethical Hacking module.  This will give you access to the course materials for the EC-Council CEH programme.
