Introduction to Garden Design and History

This course will introduce you to garden history and design.

Course Overview

During the 1st term you will learn about the evolution of gardens from the earliest records found in the ancient Middle East through to the newest forces of the 21st Century.

All the major eras of garden development are covered in colourfully illustrated tutorials. Accounts are included of the many big personalities who used their power, wealth or sublime skills to innovate and create lasting landscape masterpieces.

Where relevant, examples of historic gardens and gardeners across Ireland will be discussed.  On completion, you will be able to appreciate more fully the origin, composition and distinctiveness of gardens you visit in future

In the 2nd term you will learn how to turn your aspirations of an ideal garden into a clear concept and then into a precise plan. You will cover the guiding principles of garden design – like balance, rhythm, proportion and perspective – and what’s required in planning for and selecting appropriate plants and hard landscaping materials for a site.  You will also be introduced to the process of graphic design, learning how to draw basic plant shapes and scale plans.
