This short course is designed to assist Support Staff to understand the use of medication in a nursing home. The course will enhance understanding of the role of the nurse, the importance of the “5 Rights”, application of creams, lotions and eye-drops and what can go wrong when medication are poorly managed. This awareness course is suitable for any support staff who work under the supervision of a Qualified Nurse in assisting with the safe administration of medication.

Course Overview
This 3 hr course is designed around the medication training needs of Domiciliary Care Staff. The course develops awareness of the “5 Rights” of medication administration and increases understanding of the Monitored Dosage System used in the community context, to ensure that medication administration is safe and effective. The course also gives an overview of types of medication staff may encounter and the processes to follow where there are concerns about a client or where a medication error occurs. RQIA Minimum Standards for domiciliary care are used to ensure training develops staff capabilities within the realms of full compliance.
