Three former students commended at national BTEC Awards

From the thousands of entries across the UK for the annual BTEC Awards, three students from SERC have been formally commended for their hard work and drive for excellence.

The BTEC awards recognise and reward students, teachers, schools and colleges for their exceptional achievements in vocational learning.

Kim Bryce (age 30) from Newcastle celebrated after being highly commended for the BTEC Higher National Student of the Year. Kim has studied at SERC since 2013 and began as a part time student undertaking several courses.  Since then she has progressed through different subject’s areas and levels and completed her HND in Hair and Beauty Management.

Kim was nominated for the award by her tutor SERC Deputy Head of School for the School of Performing and Creative Arts Eunice Kerr who said:

“We can’t speak highly enough of Kim, she has been a pleasure to teach and she has been enthusiastic throughout her studies.  There were many reasons I nominated her for the award, such as her good attitude and willingness to learn, her volunteering work where her enthusiasm and willingness to give up her spare time and therapeutic talents to help others.”

She continued “I believe Kim has been an outstanding learner as she has successfully overcome many challenges to achieve her dream. A truly deserving student to be highly commended.”

Former student Lauren Murphy (age 21) from Lisburn who studied the HND in Construction and the Built Environment was also celebrating after she was commended for BTEC Higher National Student of the Year.

Robert Richardson (age 21) from Comber who studied the BTEC Level 3 90-credit Diploma in Animal Management was also commended for BTEC Land-Based Student of the Year.

SERC Principal and chief executive Ken Webb said “I am extremely proud of all the students. They have put a great deal of effort into learning and perfecting their skills through each of their courses.  The BTEC Awards are a fantastic opportunity for students to gain recognition for their hard work and determination in pursuit of excellence. This will ultimately benefit them in their future careers.”

He continued: “Each year it never ceases to amaze me the talents of our students and the challenges some of them overcome in order to achieve an education. Very well done to everyone.”
