The eight students from Level 3 Professional Chef, Level 3 Patisserie and Confectionery and Level 3 Hospitality and Events courses were accompanied by SERC Innovation Advisor Elizabeth Major and SERC Lecturer in Hospitality & Catering Paul Monaghan, alongside tutors and students from several other course.
While in Bali, students had several enriching experiences. Students took part in a team building session at Bali Kuno jungle camp. The culinary students also visited Tenganan Village, the oldest village in Bali, to learn about travel and tourism, as well as Plataran Hotel for a site tour and learning about the catering and hospitality management of a hotel in Bali. Later during their stay in the country, the culinary students got hands-on with cooking classes. “We had two cookery experiences in Bali”, said Level 3 Professional Cookery student Duncan McKee, “one was at the luxury Plataran Ubud Hotel, and one in a traditional Bali cookery school at Ubad Ubud, where we made lots of local dishes such as tuna wrapped in leaves dipped in their secret sauce and coconut brown rice pudding which was amazing.”
“My favourite part of Bali was staying in Bali Kuno which is a jungle. It's a totally different way of life compared to back home and I made loads of new friends who I still keep in contact with.”
While in Bali, students also got to immerse themselves in the local culture though traditional Balinese Ogoh-Ogoh and Batik painting workshops, a Kumulilir Coffee plantation visit, and attending the Pengerupukan Celebration Day parade.
Duncan concludes, “Overall, I loved the trip. I feel like several skills of mine have improved, like multitasking and time management, and my confidence has increased too through meeting and talking to so many people. It was fantastic to experience a different culture.”
