SERC Students Showcase Media Projects

The Island Arts Centre in Lisburn provided the perfect venue for media students to showcase their first year major projects to family, friends and guests recently.

The showcase featured short video reviews in which students were tasked with selecting a film and analysing the film techniques used in it such as lighting, editing styles, and narrative techniques; all of which were written, produced and directed by individual students completing the Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Creative Media Practice.

Having now completed their final projects for the year, some students shared their thoughts on their course so far. Aideen McMullan (17) from Lisburn commented, “I’ve found the course amazing so far, it’s really helped me put my skills into action and show off my creative talents.” Echoing her positive comments, fellow student Aizan Martin (18) from Lisburn said, “I think the course has been great so far, it’s taught me a lot of new skills especially around using image and video editing software, and it’s been very engaging throughout all our work.”

Speaking at the event, Media lecturer Tim Black said, “It is always a thrill to see the first-year major projects together. For the lecturing team involved in the course, the showcase illustrates the steep learning curve of skills and knowledge that students have mastered. The results are the creativity and confidence to use a range of techniques – graphic design, video, audio production and photography - to deliver a range of factual, fun, entertaining and engaging projects in their Film Review Shows.”

He added, “All of these skills are valuable on their own, but together, they make you – the students - powerful storytellers and communicators, ready to take on the creative industries – or to carve your own path. What you’ve built here is more than a portfolio - it's a strong scaffold for your next steps, into the second year of the Level 3 Media Course. You’ve learned how to think critically, create professionally, and express yourselves with confidence - qualities that will carry you far, and I am excited to see your projects next year!'
