Course Overview

This part-time course is delivered at the Downpatrick campus and focuses on the operating principles of automotive air conditioning (A/C) systems, including the safe and efficient use of service equipment for systems using R134a and R1234yf refrigerants.

Assessment includes theoretical knowledge and practical demonstrations of refrigerant handling procedures to meet the requirements of Regulation EC842/2006 and Directive 2006/40/EC.

This course is for individuals currently working or seeking to work in the motor trade with responsibilities for servicing vehicle air conditioning systems.

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • Relevant experience working in the motor trade

This course will cover subject matter relating to:

  • Operation of automotive A/C systems

  • Use and properties of fluorinated greenhouse gases

  • Environmental impact and global warming potential

  • Key provisions of EC Regulation 842/2006 and Directive 2006/40/EC

  • Recovery procedures for fluorinated gases

  • Handling and operation of refrigerant cylinders

  • Connecting and disconnecting recovery sets

  • Safe and correct use of recovery equipment

Successful candidates will be issued with a certificate which shows they are compliant. It will underpin and enhance a working knowledge of MAC systems and is a natural progression to the level 4 qualification which delves more deeply into system diagnosis.
