Why Study This Course

This course is 90 hours class time (GLH). It includes peer group training supervisory supervision. CPCAB requires: 15 hours of clinical supervision work and 5 hours of supervisory supervision during the course. This course is aligned with supervision good practice, ethics & training guidelines.

Course Overview

The supervisory skills learned will equip participants to manage the fundamental aspects of clinical supervisor’s role, including:

  • Providing supervisee support and guidance
  • Encouraging self- review
  • Monitoring supervisee progress
  • Managing legal and ethical boundaries
  • Developing self-awareness of the supervision process
  • Working with the relationship which impact on both the counselling and supervision process.

Participants will need to:

  • Have both supervisees and supervisory supervision (You must be Therapeutically working with supervisees in private practice and not an agency/organisation).
  • Be working as counsellors under supervision.

Candidates must have :-

  • CPCAB Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling or
  • CPCAB Level 5 Diploma in CBT/ Psychotherapeutic Counselling
  • Or equivalent
  • 450 supervised hours of client work

  • Unit 1 – Model and supervise the professional framework
  • Unit 2 – Model and supervise the skilled use of the relationship
  • Unit 3 – Model and supervise the use of theory and research on diversity
  • Unit 4 – Model and supervise a user-centred approach to the work
  • Unit 5 – Model and supervise the skilled use of the self
  • Unit 6 – Model and supervise the coherent use of theory, research and skills
  • Unit 7 – Model and supervise the self-reflective practitioner

90 Guided learning hours in total which will be 3.5 hours per week in college.

You’ll be assessed through:
  • A portfolio (ongoing coursework)
  • A final case review
  • Your practical supervision skills and logs
And you’ll receive:
  • Continuous developmental feedback from tutors and peers
  • Clear criterion-based feedback (proficient / not yet proficient)
Your portfolio is assessed by your tutor against CPCAB learning outcomes.
Assessment is also based on your skills in practice, including:
  • Observed supervision skills (e.g. in training groups)
  • Work with supervisees (minimum hours required)
  • Engagement in supervisory supervision (your own supervision as a supervisor)

This qualification can lead you into roles supervising counsellors in agencies or private practice, and can open pathways into leadership, training, or service management within counselling services.

The CPCAB Level 6 qualification in Therapeutic Counselling Supervision improves employability by showing that the individual is qualified to safely and effectively supervise other counsellors. This can be in private practice or with an organisation in a therapeutic setting.

There are no additional costs for this course - unless your own supervisor is unable to supervise you and your supervisees as you are training.
