The nine students from the Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Business course were accompanied by SERC Principal Lecturer Catherine Anderson and SERC Lecturer in Tourism and Event Management Rachel Suitor on the trip, alongside tutors and students from several other courses.
While in Bali, students had several enriching experiences. Business student Ben Forbes comments, “My favourite part of Bali was definitely Bali Kuno camp. When we were told we would be spending 2 nights in a shack in the jungle I was not looking forward to it at all. However, it made for some of the biggest laughs I’ve had in my life. The activities we did whilst in the camp were extremely fun too, especially taking part in a mud pit. We also spent a day with a business called Made Tea who specialise in growing and selling herbal teas. We learnt about the different business opportunities in Bali through this business and it was really interesting to see how a business operates in a different country.”
The students also visited Tenganan Village, the oldest village in Bali, and Plataran Hotel for a site tour and information about the catering and hospitality management of a hotel in Bali. As well as this, students were able to immerse themselves in the local culture though traditional Balinese Ogoh-Ogoh and Batik painting workshops and attending the Pengerupukan Celebration Day parade.
Ben concludes, “The trip was seriously a once in a lifetime opportunity. Spending two weeks with 30+ people I’d never met before had me slightly worried at first, however everybody got on so well and I made many new friends for life. I also strengthened my communication skills by building relationships with so many new people, in such a short space of time. I would highly recommend everyone to apply for any future trips like this one.”
