“My favourite part of my apprenticeship is the practical side. I love the feeling of connecting all the pipes up and testing it and finding no leaks – it's really satisfying to see something you’ve made work well. Problem solving is also fun for me and also something you learn how to do on the course– sometimes in class we will be given specific issues with a pipe system and it’s rewarding to find the solution to the issue yourself – it teaches you how to think outside the box.”

“There’s theory you learn as well; you learn all about the different kinds of equipment and tools you need to use and how to use them; how to install and maintain pipework systems, central heating, and sanitary systems, as well as all the relevant health and safety information and the principles on how to carry out all the practical work so that it’s up to code. It all helps you do better practical work.”

“I work as an apprentice for A. Burns Plumbing and Heating. Most of our work is based around Lisburn, Craigavon and Belfast. A lot of the work we’ve done recently has involved going into newly purchased houses and fitting new piping into walls and floors as well as installing new heat systems. Plumbing often involves working closely with other trades such as carpenters, plasterers and electricians, which means I learn a bit about their work too which is interesting. Overall, I enjoy the work so much.”

“After this course I want to go on to the Level 3 Apprenticeship in Plumbing. I’m hoping that by the time I finish the Level 3, I’ll have enough experience and skills to go out on my own on jobs, maybe start my own plumbing business eventually and take on apprentices to help train them up.”

“I would recommend the course, it really opens your eyes and challenges you. The tutors are patient, but they also push you to where you need to go. There's lots of resources to help you and the workshops are really good too. I feel like there’s definitely a bright future ahead of me – there's always someone who needs a plumber.”
