“Everyone moves on from St Colmcille's High School in Crossgar as the school only goes up to Year 12. I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to do next, through I was certain I didn’t want to take the A-Level route, as I don’t particularly like sitting exams. The thought of building up to big important exams at the end of two years did not appeal to me.
“My school was good about keeping you up to speed with your options after GCSEs, so I was aware what was on offer at SERC. I was initially interested in Health and Social Care, but mostly Art and Design, so I planned to come along to an open day to find out more about each of the courses. This helped me decided on the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design. I applied and secured a place on the course.
“Coming to the open day meant that I knew what to expect in the college when I came in September. Two of my friends from school also joined the course so I knew some people already. I have made new friends and everyone in the class gets on well.
“College, and the course, is different from school but you get used to the workload and the deadlines for assignments quickly. You are more responsible for managing your work and submitting on time but there is some flexibility if you need it.
“The best thing about the course is that I am working all year towards my final grade and it doesn’t all depend on one exam on one single day. I get feedback and know how well I am progressing over the year."
“My favourite part of the art and design course has been painting, but there is real variety throughout the course. We have had a couple of outings to the Ulster Museum and to Down Arts Centre to see different exhibitions. And we have also had a talk from a past student about his specialism in photography."
“The lecturers are nice and very supportive. They do encourage you to work to the deadlines as there is a lot to cover over the year."
“The facilities in the art and design rooms include a dark room and computer suite with specialist design software. There is also College Kitchen, the canteen where you can get a snack or lunch.”
“I have already had a look at my choices for progression, and I am considering the Foundation Diploma in Art & Design with Media Practice, but I am keeping my options open.”
“I would encourage anyone to consider coming to SERC if they are ready to move on. There is great support and plenty of choice in the range of courses.”
