The Beauty Therapy Traineeship at SERC is ideal for those with an interest in starting a career in the beauty industry. Students can practice and develop their skills whilst training on each other and completing practical assessments in the college’s state-of-the-art commercial beauty salons on campus.
Beauty Trainee Mayah Hamilton (17) from Crossgar, comments, “I chose SERC because my friend who had previously studied at the college recommended it to me, saying it has a more independent learning environment than school, and I think learning in that environment is way better and helps you focus more. After that I did some research online and I really liked the sound of the course, so I applied.”
Another Beauty Trainee, Ash Selkh (17) from Dundrum, reflects on her course so far saying, “I originally wanted to do art but decided that beauty would be a better fit for my future plans to open a salon, while still allowing me to express myself artistically through the work I do in makeup, hair and nails. I’ve been really enjoying the course so far. One of my favourite parts of the course is building relationships with clients – people can come into our campus salons and get treatments done, which helps us develop our skills practically, which I love as I’m a hands-on learner. I’d absolutely recommend the course; the tutors are lovely because they support us a lot and you can tell they care about building a good relationship with you.”
On the course contents, Beauty Trainee Emma Atkinson (17) from Newcastle, explains, "So far on the course we have covered waxing, manicures, pedicures, eyelash and eyebrow tinting as well as facials. The salon has all the equipment we need to do our treatments, including steamers, wax pots, makeup, nail polishes and makeup removers. I want to eventually start my own business working on eyebrows, lashes and nails, and I definitely feel like this course is sending me in the right direction to achieve that. You make a lot of friends studying here, and the course is really enjoyable overall.”
Beauty Trainee Leah Cash (17) from Killyleagh, echoes the positive comments of her friends; “Waxing is my favourite part of the course, because you can really see the difference the work you do has on a client. Eyelash tinting and eyebrow tinting is really fun because you can help someone feel more confident, and making people feel more confident about themselves is a big reason I like this work so much. All in all, I think SERC is a more welcoming place than school for students, because you can go into the course area you specifically want a job in, whereas with A-Levels you need to study something you might not be passionate about. You get treated more like an adult at SERC and the work is more practical compared to just studying in a classroom, so I think it’s been great so far.”
