Oliver, who is 17, completed his GCSEs at Campbell College before coming to SERC. Oliver started on the Level 2 Traineeship in Applied Science. “The traineeship definitely set me up well for my current Level 3 course”, Oliver says. “Knowing all the tutors and the facilities already gave me an advantage over other students just starting in the college. I also feel like I have an advantage because the skills and knowledge you gain on the traineeship can be directly applied to all the work you do on the Level 3 course.”
On his current Level 3 course, he says, “It covers lots of units such as the living body and evolution, but my favourite topic we’ve covered so far has been space and looking into the big bang theory. You have a lot more freedom and independence at SERC compared to school, you have more responsibility for your own work, and you're treated like an adult by your tutors which I really enjoy. The induction week is very helpful as you are put into groups with other students to take on a project and work together, forming bonds and friendships within the first week of starting.”
Oliver concludes, “I would highly recommend SERC to others thinking of enrolling, everyone at the college is very friendly. After my course, I hope to go to on to university to study biological sciences or physiotherapy. My long-term goal is to eventually work in physiotherapy for a professional sports team, and I feel like SERC is giving me a good pathway to reach that goal through my studies.”
