The field trips and residential study visits that you will take part in on this course, will allow you to gain a true insight into the Travel and Tourism sector.  Your will also gain valuable experience through work placement in the Travel and Tourism industry.

You will learn about Travel and Tourism Destinations, both at home and abroad and the Travel and Tourism industry, progressing onto understanding the Customer Experience within Tourism.

Developing your wider skills as well as providing you with the technical skills and knowledge in your chosen area, the Traineeship will help you to develop a range of transversal skills that are important for employment including:

Course Overview

On successful completion of a NI Traineeship, participants will receive a full Traineeship Diploma equivalent to five GCSEs at grades A*-C (including English and Mathematics qualifications at level 2).

The course will require a commitment of 17 hours per week on campus, one day on work placement and Essential Skills, where applicable.  The course purpose is to inspire and enthuse learners to consider a career in the Travel and Tourism sector. It is the aim of the qualification to give learners the opportunity to gain a broad knowledge and understanding of, and develop skills in, the travel and tourism sector. It also hopes to support progression to a more specialised Level 3 vocational or academic tourism course or an apprenticeship. Fundamentally, it hopes to give learners the potential opportunity, in due course, to enter employment within a wide range of junior job roles across the travel and tourism sector, for example posts in travel agencies, visitor attractions and the tourist information centre.

You will be required to complete Essential Skills in Literacy and Numeracy if you do not have a GCSE grade C in English or Maths.  

You will need:

  • 4 GCSEs grade D-G, including grade E in Maths and grade D in English or equivalent

Applicants that have not obtained the above grades may be eligible to enrol upon a Traineeship programme dependent upon successful completion of literacy and / or numeracy pre-entry assessments as required. Please contact us for further information.

Optional modules may be subject to change.

On completion of the OCN NI Traineeship In Travel and Tourism, you can progress to BTEC L3 Travel and Tourism within SERC (which must include min 8 credits at Merit or above).

Alternative progression routes include Level 3 Further Education courses at SERC, or a Level 3 Apprenticeship (possibly with your work placement employer). 

This can lead you to higher education options.
