Course Overview

This part-time course introduces the foundational knowledge, skills, and behaviours needed to lead and manage successfully. Designed to suit learners currently working in, or aspiring to, supervisory roles, it focuses on practical, real-world application of leadership theories. You will examine how organisations function, the role of a manager, and how different management styles can influence performance. The course also supports personal development, helping you build confidence in your leadership abilities.

Assessment is typically based on written assignments using real or researched workplace examples. The qualification can be achieved through flexible study options suited to adult learners, including those in paid or voluntary roles.

The course focuses on: the ways organisations operate, the application of management and leadership approaches and how these can positively impact on your own role, leading to improved performance.


This course is designed for individuals currently in or aspiring to team leadership or supervisory roles.

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • GCSE English or Essential Skills Level 2

  • OR relevant supervisory experience

Recommended Experience:

  • Suitable for those with recent workplace experience (paid or voluntary)

  • Alternatively, those willing to conduct research on organisations to complete assignments

To be eligible for funded access to this course, learners must:

  • Be aged 18 or over

  • Be eligible to work in Northern Ireland

  • Be settled in Northern Ireland and ordinarily resident in the UK for at least three years

  • OR have indefinite leave to enter or remain in the UK

This course will cover subject matter relating to:

  • CMI Unit 301: Principles of Management and Leadership

    • Understand how organisations operate

    • Understand the management role

    • Understand the application of management and leadership approaches

    • Understand the knowledge, skills and behaviours of effective managers

Upon successful completion of their qualification, learners are able to progress to further learning within the suite of Level 3 Qualifications in Principles of Management and Leadership - i.e. completing an Award and topping-up to Certificate or Diploma.  

Learners may also wish to further their ongoing personal and professional development by accessing other CMI qualifications, such as the CMI Level 5 Qualifications in Management and Leadership with the goal of becoming a Chartered Manager.

Learners who are aspiring to a management role may progress to the job roles such as:  

  • Team Leader
  • Supervisor
  • Project Officer
  • Shift Manager 
  • Foreperson
