Course Overview

This part-time course, delivered at our Newtownards and other campuses, has been updated in line with the 4th edition of the IET Code of Practice. It is aimed at practicing electricians, technicians, and engineers with experience in electrical installations, particularly in domestic and commercial settings.

Electric Vehicles have an important role to play in meeting air quality legislation and the UK’s commitment to climate change targets. For this reason, the UK government is actively supporting the switch to electric vehicles.

Learners will cover the installation of dedicated conductive charging equipment for pure electric vehicles (EVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and extended-range electric vehicles (E-REVs). The course also covers compliance with BS EN 61851 and the IET Code of Practice for EV Charging Equipment Installations.

Assessment includes one written assignment, one practical assignment, and an online examination.

This course is designed for qualified electricians and MCS installers looking to upskill into the EV charging sector.

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • Level 3 Award in the Initial Verification and Certification of Electrical Installations

  • Level 3 Award in the Requirements for Electrical Installations (BS 7671, current edition)

Recommended Experience:

  • Experience with electrical installations in domestic and/or non-domestic premises

This course will cover the core technical knowledge and skills required to safely and effectively install EV charging systems in line with current regulations.

  • Installation of AC and DC charging equipment for plug-in electric vehicles

  • Compliance with BS EN 61851 and IET Code of Practice

  • Components and configurations of EV charging systems

  • Electrical system and charging port/post installation

  • New technologies in EV infrastructure

On successful completion, learners can progress to further qualifications including:

  • Level 3 Award in Electrical Energy Storage Systems

  • Level 3 Award in the Installation and Maintenance of Solar Photovoltaic Systems

  • Level 5 OCN NI Certificate in Green Technologies
