Course Overview

Delivered part-time, this course is tailored to professionals and individuals interested in building a career in the import and export industry. The Certificate in International Trade consists of four individual modules, each awarded separately, with successful completion of all four leading to the full Level 3 Certificate. The course is designed to develop knowledge in global business structures, market analysis, trade management, and the critical documentation and logistics required for international trade. Assessment is coursework-based, with assignments completed for each module.

This course is intended for individuals interested in a career in international trade.

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • Interest in the import and export industry.

  • Ability to complete written assignments.

Recommended Experience:

  • Employment or experience in a business involved in imports and exports.

  • Understanding of trade and export issues specific to Northern Ireland.

Fundamentals of International Business will provide you with an understanding of the different types of business and organisational structures necessary to undertake international trade. 

The Global Marketplace module is designed to enable students to distinguish between developed and developing countries, identify the major languages and main centres of population. You will identify the main trading blocs in global trade, describe the origins, objectives and future developments of the European Union.

The Introduction to International Trade Management module will introduce you to key concepts of managing a business involved in international trade. Students will learn the basic elements of business planning, the marketing concept and the main elements of the marketing mix.

International Transport and Documentation, this module will provide students with knowledge of how to list the main elements of the export order process from enquiry to payment collection.

On successful completion of the Level 3 Certificate in International Trade, learners can progress to higher-level qualifications in business management. The course provides a strong foundation for career advancement within the import/export industry or further professional development with the Institute of Export.

The course is offered free of charge via SKILL UP - the flexible skills fund, fully funded by DFE.

To be eligible you must meet the following criteria:

(a)   over 18 years of age;

(b)   eligible to work in Northern Ireland;

(c)   ‘settled’ in Northern Ireland, and has been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least three years; or

(d)   is a person who has indefinite leave to enter or remain in the UK.
