Intensive Academic English Summer Course

2, 3 & 4 Week Programmes

Academic English courses offer a bridge from general English to English for Academic Purposes by developing skills needed for academic study and continuing professional development (CPD) at university or college, both at home and overseas. Aimed at post-secondary and post-graduate students, the courses include vocabulary development, extensive reading and listening skills, academic writing and development of speaking and presentation skills.

The courses also focus on information literacy, research, problem solving and critical thinking which are essential for future study. Vocabulary will be delivered via themes and global issues, with an emphasis on projects and a language portfolio. Students will become autonomous learners, be self-aware and reflective and will be encouraged to work collaboratively in teams and partnerships.

The main aim is to improve your language level and overall academic skills which can be transferred successfully to your next place of academic study.

IELTS Preparation Course

2, 3 & 4 Week Programmes

The IELTS Preparation Courses are designed to train you for the IELTS examination and help you to achieve your best possible band score. If you need to study or work where English is the language of communication, the IELTS exam is used as evidence of language ability. IELTS scores are recognised by universities and colleges, employers, immigration authorities and professional bodies.

Each individual course is a highly intensive programme, focusing on all of the main skills that are required in the IELTS exam, including exam familiarisation and strategies, language skills and academic vocabulary development. As part of the course, you will do regular examination practice tests and receive feedback and advice to develop your skills further.

Pre University English

3 Month Programme

If you need to move from high school general English to English for Academic Purposes, our 12 week combination course provides participants who already have a good level of English with the additional techniques and skills needed for academic study through English. Significant instruction time is dedicated to developing academic English reading, writing, grammar, listening, speaking and vocabulary skills. Topics covered include: participating in tutorials and seminars; academic listening and note-taking; giving presentations; academic writings skills for essays, reports and reviews; examination techniques; academic reading skills and critical thinking.

Designed for students transitioning through IELTS band 4.5-6.5, students can progress to a higher level at the end of each 12 week course. Students will study for 20 hours per week with 5 hours of supported self-study each week.

The main aim is to improve your language level and overall academic skills which can be transferred successfully to your next place of academic study.

International Summer School: English Plus

4 Week Programme

English Plus is a comprehensive programme of study and development for International students who wish to develop their English language skills and have the opportunity to gain a qualification in a key subject area choosing from Leadership and Management, Engineering, Travel and Tourism and Information Technology.

The programme consists of three parts which combine to develop English language skills for Academic Purposes, provides the opportunity to gain an internationally recognised qualification in a key subject area and offers a carefully designed social programme to ensure that opportunities to develop English skills in a social setting to maximise retention of language in context.

All English Plus programmes are linked to an internationally recognised qualification in English IELTS and a related subject specialism qualification.

International Placements
and Industry Research Projects

6 Week Programme

International placements enhance personal and academic development and add an international perspective to complement the student’s existing programme of study.

SERC has links with over 5,500 national and international organisations throughout Northern Ireland with extended links in Ireland and the European Union.

Prior to commencement of an international placement with one of our partner organisations, students will undertake a comprehensive programme of induction.

This induction will incorporate Business Practices in Northern Ireland, the Competitive Environment, Employment Law, Health and Safety and Marketing Practices.

International Placement Programme

The International Placement Programme will allow students to develop a detailed understanding of working practices in an international setting within Northern Ireland.

The six week programme will include aspects of hands on industrial experience, how the industry interacts in the local and national economy and Business English language development.

The links and placements will allow detailed investigation of their chosen industry area in Northern Ireland.
