Level 3 Electrical Installation Apprentices at South Eastern Regional College (SERC) recently took part in Sighted Guide Training delivered by Guide Dogs NI at the college’s Newtownards Campus. The Sighted Guide Training taught participants how to safely and confidently assist people living with sight loss.
Through a mix of discussion, demonstrations, and practical exercises, the electrical apprentices learnt how to offer appropriate guidance, navigate different environments, and communicate clearly and respectfully with someone who has a vision impairment.
Sam Lyttle, Deputy Head of School of the Built Environment at SERC said, “This session, delivered by Paula McLarnon, Sighted Guide Training Officer with Guide Dogs NI, helped our apprentices develop valuable communication and practical skills that will support them in their future careers as they prepare to work in homes, public buildings, or busy sites. It encouraged them to think about accessibility within their profession, from the layout of electrical installations to the importance of clear pathways and safe working practices.”
He added, "Understanding sight loss and knowing how to offer safe sighted guide assistance helps create more inclusive and accessible spaces and having these skills means our apprentices can make a real difference to the wider community.”
Paula McLarnon, Sighted Guide Training Officer with Guide Dogs NI said, “Our aim is to build confidence and awareness. Sight loss can affect anyone, and simple skills - like safe guiding techniques and good communication - can transform someone’s experience.”
She added, “The apprentices were enthusiastic, engaged, and really embraced the opportunity to learn how they can make a positive difference.”
