Electrical students at South Eastern Regional College’s (SERC) Newtownards Campus got an insight into the regulatory body for the electrical industry, when an Engineer from the National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting (NICEIC) visited the college.

John Cully, a NICEIC Area Engineer, joined Level 3 Electrical Installation Apprentices and Level 2 Electrical Trainees to explain the work of NICEIC and the service they provide to the electrical sector.

The NICEIC is a leading regulatory body for the electrical industry in the UK. It assesses and certifies electricians and electrical contractors to ensure they meet strict safety and technical standards. NICEIC also provides training, guidance, and ongoing assessments, helping maintain high-quality workmanship across the sector. For consumers, it offers reassurance that registered contractors are competent and compliant with current regulations, improving safety and trust in electrical work nationwide.

Sam Lyttle,  Deputy Head of School of the Built Environment said, “John’s presentation on the NICEIC provided valuable insight into the organisation’s role within the electrical industry, particularly around the inspection, testing, and assessment of electrical installations.

He added, “The session also gave our apprentices a fantastic opportunity to register as NICEIC junior members.  This will help them take early steps into professional recognition.”

Sam concluded, “Our students found the experience highly engaging, informative, and extremely worthwhile.   We would like to thank John for giving them a clear understanding of industry expectations and standards  as they prepare for careers in the sector.”
