Jake Drinkwater, from Holywood, a SERC BTEC Level 3 (Extended) Diploma in Information Technology student, reflects on how his course helped him develop his skills and progress towards his desired career.
Jake left school after his GCSEs and went to Our Lady’s and Saint Patrick’s College before deciding SERC offered the right pathway for him. After he completes his course, Jake will be pursuing a career with the British Army in the Royal Irish Regiment, continuing his education further while serving to eventually reach a Level 5 qualification.
He comments, “What attracted me to SERC was the choice of specific subject courses and freedom from normal school life, I attended an open day and spoke to the IT staff who helped me enrol on this course. The things I enjoyed most about my course were the variety of topics covered and the level of detail, it really drew me into the course.”
“To someone coming to SERC, what I would say would be to come with an open mind. College is extremely different to your previous schooling experience and it may take some time to adjust, but be patient. To a person considering the same course as me, I would say to come with a high work ethic as there is a lot of work involved, however, once the initial stages are complete it gets easier to work and is very satisfying.”
“My overall experience of SERC has been extremely positive in the short time I have attended, with the more independent approach to education which I feel suits me more than traditional schooling I would 100% recommend SERC to those seeking further and/or higher education, the more relaxed and independent nature of the college is a far better learning environment in my opinion, allowing people to express themselves and learn the way they feel is most effective for them.”
