When Madison Halliday (19 and from Bangor) left school, she knew she wanted to pursue her interest in animals. Madison says: “Animals have always been a huge focal point in my life, so I knew that’s where I wanted to concentrate my studies.”

Madison continues: “I left school having completed A-levels and began looking for suitable courses. Through social media and online searches, I learned that SERC offered courses in animal management so that’s how I came to enrol in the HNC in Animal Management.”

After successfully completing the HNC course, Madison progressed to the HND in Animal Management on  SERC Bangor Campus, which she is currently studying.

Madison says her favourite part of the course is the close-knit feeling of the small classes and getting to work in the SERC animal house. This is home to a wide variety of animals, including tortoises, mice, rats and a  hedgehog. It also houses several exotic animals such as a tarantula, snake, salamander and bearded dragon.

Throughout the course, students get the opportunity to study each animal closely to learn about their proper care, handling, nutrition, behaviour and management. In addition, a range of visiting domestic animals such as dogs are brought in for students to learn how to do health and welfare assessments.

As well as the practical elements of the course, students learn theory including animal anatomy, first aid, the principles of veterinary practice and ethical considerations in animal care.

Madison says, “The staff at SERC are amazing. The tutors are fun and engaging and if you ever need any help, all you have to do is ask and the support will be provided. All needs are met.”

After completing the HND this year, Madison hopes to pursue a career as a dog trainer or dog handler, specifically in the field of disease detection and medical response.

She says, “My time at SERC has been an amazing adventure! I wouldn’t change anything about my experience – from the people I’ve met to the course I’ve chosen. SERC has opened so many doors for me and I’m confident it will lead me to so many more amazing opportunities.”

Higher education courses at SERC are now open for applications for 2026 entry.
