SERC Students Attend Hard Hitting Roadsafe Roadshow

Students from across SERC’s Bangor Campus attended the Cool FM Roadsafe Roadshow delivered by PSNI at Bangor Elim Church recently.
In partnership with Ards and North Down Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP), the Roadshow shared shocking figures about death on our roads: sadly, during 2022 the total number of persons who lost their lives on our roads was 57. In 2023 this number had increased to 71, and in 2024 it reached 69.
Pete Snodden, from Cool FM, hosted the Roadshow which is based around Craig, a typical young driver who has just passed his driving test, bought a new car and is excited about the prospect of going into town and picking up his girlfriend. He is 17 years old, a show-off, cheeky and over confident. He has no idea of the events he is about to experience.
The Roadshow then follows the story of Craig’s car crash starting with a description of the collision before moving to a range of speakers who meet Craig and his passenger throughout the night as a result of this crash – a police officer, a paramedic, a fire fighter, a hospital consultant and finally, our victim. These people are not actors. One by one they talked about Craig’s car crash and their experiences at real road traffic collisions, dealing with the injured, dealing with the families of the bereaved and dealing with their own personal emotions.
Throughout the Roadshow, road safety television advertisements were shown, along with other relevant crash footage. The Roadshow concluded with a display of startling statistics, which demonstrates the reality of road death to the young audience.
The Cool FM radio presenter closed the event with the message....It Could Be You.
