Visitors to the Island Arts Centre in Lisburn have been able to enjoy an exhibition of works by SERC Level 2 Trainees and L3 Diploma students on Art and Design courses. The pieces have been displayed in the community arts walkway, and are available to view and buy until the end of the month.

Works in ink, acrylic and watercolour have impressed the public, and some pictures sold quickly, to the great satisfaction of the artists who produced them.

The exhibition takes the theme of “scapes” – either real-life landscapes or products of the imagination - and the students not only produced the art but also planned, hung and promoted the exhibition. This formed an essential element of their course, supporting the development of skills beyond their core vocational training, including teamwork and planning, as well as building confidence.

Trainee Mary-Ellen McLoughlin, who is 17 and from Lisburn, said,

“I take inspiration from others on the course and it’s a very friendly and supportive atmosphere in class.  This helped us to work as a team, and I think the exhibition we have produced is pretty cool!”

Tutor Mary Doran added,

"This is great experience for the students, and a good way to celebrate their creativity and potential as they start on their artistic journey. As well as requiring them to plan, curate and present their work in a public setting, it’s an opportunity for them to reflect on their own work and share their achievements with the wider community."
