SERC is offering a new VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Fashion, Theatre and Media Hair and Make-up staring this September at Bangor and Lisburn Campuses. This one-year course has an emphasis on developing students’ practical skills to an advanced level, with a focus on make-up and hairstyling within the theatrical and performing arts sector.

SERC lecturer Judith Magill says: “The course will provide students with the knowledge, understanding and skills to work as a hair and make-up artist. The topics covered include airbrush make-up for the face, camouflage make-up, fashion and photographic make-up and media make-up. Units include styling and fitting postiche, wig services and fantasy hair design.”

Student Lucy Clarke recently completed the Level 2 Traineeship in Hair and Media Make-Up at Bangor Campus and has already applied for the new Level 3 course. Lucy says: “I’ve enjoyed all aspects of the Level 2 course including cutting, styling, colouring hair and doing all kinds of make-up including stage make-up and wedding make-up. The Level 3 course offers an opportunity to progress and develop my skills further with the ultimate long-term goal of opening my own salon.”

Lucy continues: “Attending SERC has honestly been the best experience of my life so far. It is a welcoming environment where everyone is friendly.”

Another student who has had a positive experience at SERC is Cassidy McCabe-Clarke (20) from Newtownards. She also completed the Level 2 Traineeship in Hair and Media Make-Up at Bangor Campus and plans to study the Level 3 course starting in September. Cassidy has always had a passion for hair and make-up from a young age and says that attending SERC enabled her to pursue this. She says “Everyone is very welcoming at SERC, and I have made lots of new friends. I’ve enjoyed studying a subject I love in a fun and friendly environment.”

She continues: “The Level 3 course will allow me to further my studies and hopefully enable me to continue to university. My long-term ambition is to work in hair and media make-up in film or television.”
