SERC are encouraging staff and students to stop smoking this October. Having linked up with Cancer Focus NI, there will be sessions in Ards, Bangor, Downpatrick and Lisburn across the entire month to help you take the first steps to quitting.

In Northern Ireland, 2300 people die each year from a smoking related illness and that’s more than six people per day.

Smoking is the main cause of illness and early death in Northern Ireland. It causes many types of cancer (including cervical cancer) and can also lead to leukaemia, heart disease, stroke, serious breathing conditions and weak bones.

A smoker’s eyesight is more likely to get worse as they get older and sometimes there is no treatment for this. In severe cases, this can mean the smoker will eventually go blind. The list of conditions due to smoking is extensive and horrific.

Cancer Focus NI will visit the four Campuses and the clinics are open to staff and students to meet with the staff to discuss the services available.

Cancer experienced staff to help you stop smoking will provide a friendly, supportive service in a relaxed environment. They’ll help you assess how addicted you are to nicotine, overcome the fear of quitting, cope with cravings, manage stress, avoid weight gain and adjust to a healthier lifestyle.”

If you wish to obtain more information and support go along to one of the Cancer Focus ‘Stop Smoking Clinics’ as detailed below:

Drop in during these times or email studentsunion@serc.ac.uk.
