Construction Studies

Construction Studies is all about how buildings and structures are planned, designed and built — from the first idea through to the finished project. At South Eastern Regional College, you’ll explore the key stages of construction and how different trades and professionals work together to deliver safe, high-quality builds.

You’ll learn about construction materials and methods, site set‑out, sustainability, and the basics of building regulations and health & safety. You’ll also develop practical skills such as reading drawings, understanding specifications, estimating quantities and costs, and planning work in the right sequence.

This subject can lead to a wide range of careers across the built environment, including site supervision, management, surveying and design support roles. It’s ideal if you enjoy hands-on learning, problem‑solving and working as part of a team — with skills that are valued on building sites, in offices and across major construction projects.

“As a Roads Consultant, I primarily oversee road surfacing and other maintenance tasks; because of work and other responsibilities, full-time learning just isn’t something I can do, so studying part-time on this course has been really valuable.”

Higher Level Apprenticeship in Construction & the Built Environment
“You leave university and employers want experience, but A-Levels and university alone won’t give you that. I already have two years’ experience behind me as well as qualifications, and I have also proved I am employable and stick at a job.”
