Business Studies students from SERC Bangor Campus chose to stage a charity concert when they were tasked with organising a public event as part of their coursework.

The team of six friends from the Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Business hosted a rock concert in SPACE Theatre, Bangor, bringing two bands in to perform, and raising £150 for Cancer Focus NI.

The students were asked to demonstrate professional skills such as event management, communication, negotiation, time management, problem solving and team working - all attributes which are important for real-life employment, and which feature in SERC’s project-based learning.

They worked as a team with each taking on a role covering a specific area such as band management, marketing and advertising, and accounting.

The Business Studies students:  Bazyli Giertuga (17); Connor Kennedy (17);   Luke Cathers (18); and Yves Armstrong-Donaldson (17) - all from Bangor  - along with  Amelia Hillis (who is 17 and from Comber) and Poppy Duff (18 and from Holywood), extended the real-life learning  to SERC peers, when they invited student bands Meatwagon and Electric Voodoo to get involved, allowing the musicians to gain more experience playing live in front of an audience.
