The Academy is designed to equip electricians, plumbers and renewable energy professionals with the skills needed to meet growing demand for low-carbon technologies. It aims to deliver qualifications, enhanced employment outcomes and long-term career progression for participants across the Ards and North Down area. It has been developed in direct response to employer demand and emerging skills shortages.
Funded by the Department for Communities, Labour Market Partnerships create targeted employment action plans for council areas, allowing for collaboration at local and regional level to support people towards and into work.
Participants will have the opportunity to gain up to three industry-recognised qualifications from a suite of nine approved qualifications, which will cover areas such as the installation of solar voltaic systems, electrical energy storage systems, air source heat pumps and electric vehicle charging installations, as well as the design of heat pump systems, retrofit, reducing energy use in construction, hot water systems, and water regulations.
This will help participants access higher-value work and support business growth. Participants will also benefit from employer engagement opportunities, industry networking and access to further training and employment pathways.
Mayor of Ards and North Down, Councillor Craig Blaney said,
"Ards and North Down Borough Council is committed to supporting residents and businesses to thrive. The Greentech Upskilling Academy is helping local people gain the skills needed for the jobs of the future while supporting businesses to meet growing demand in the green economy. This programme is an important investment in our workforce, our local economy and a more sustainable future."
Training will be delivered through SERC's specialist facilities and will be supported by dedicated tutors, mentoring, careers guidance and progression support.
