Skills for Life and Work students welcomed Guide Dogs NI, including some furry friends, to SERC Newtownards campus recently.

Guide Dogs is the largest assistance dog charity in the world and are world leaders in puppy socialisation and dog training. They provide several services to support people with vision impairment in order for them to live actively and independently.

As part of their course, Skills for Life and Work students cover a unit on health in which they learn about using different methods and equipment to support individuals with visual and hearing impairments. To support this unit, Guide Dogs NI Sighted Guide Training Officer Paula McLarnon, as well as puppies in training, visited the students so they could find out more about the work Guide Dogs NI do.

SERC tutor Susan Annett commented, “Paula kindly gave a talk to the students, giving information on practical skills for guiding individuals with sight loss, while also deepening the students understanding of the challenges faced by blind and partially sighted people. We’d like to thank Guide Dogs NI for giving the students a very valuable experience.”
