Students from SERC gained valuable insight into their future pathways in engineering, during a special student enrichment visit to Queen’s University Belfast earlier this month.
Simon Cummings, Deputy Head of School for the Built Environment, accompanied Level 3 Civil Engineering students to a Meet the Employers event held in the iconic Great Hall.
The event offered an inspiring look at the Civil Engineering Higher Level Apprenticeship (HLA) programme at Queen’s—an opportunity that allows students to earn a degree while getting paid and hands-on industry experience. Throughout the evening, students met with employers actively recruiting apprentices, discovered what companies look for during the hiring process, and explored the wide range of roles available across the civil engineering sector.
Simon said, “Our students connected with Queen’s academics, current HLA apprentices, and industry partners to learn more about programme expectations, weekly schedules, course content, and how the “earn while you learn” pathway can accelerate their careers.
He added, “This type of engagement gives SERC students a strong head start, helping them identify potential employer matches and understand the next steps in applying for other higher education pathways. It is important for us at SERC to help give our students as broad a picture as possible of all the options available to them, both in SERC with our own HLAs, HNDs and HNC programmes in Civil Engineering, Construction Management and Building Services Engineering, and beyond, so they can make informed choices. ”
Applications for full-time courses are now open online. Come along to our Full-time Open Evening, 4pm - 7pm on Thursday 5 March, at Bangor, Downpatrick, Lisburn and Newtownards Campuses. Real Learning for Real Life #BetterOffAtSERC.
