Big hearted students at South Eastern Regional Collage (SERC) raised a whopping £1,500 for Cancer Focus NI as part of the charity’s Bangor Teal Takeover.

The students from the BTEC Level 3 Uniformed Protective Services helped the charity focus fundraising efforts in Bangor, joining with local businesses across the city, to undertake collections earlier this month.

Irwin Pryce, Lecturer in Public Services said, “Sixteen (16) first year students conducted a bucket collection in ASDA and Main Street, Bangor on 4 March. Working in teams, the high viz clad students talked to shoppers about the work of Cancer Focus NI and raised an incredible £847 on the day.”

Irwin, who accompanied his students on their fundraising efforts, added, “This was followed up with a spin-a-thon at the Cancer Focus store on Main Street on 6 March when 14 students clocked up both mileage and money. Accompanied by Genevieve the Goat - the charity mascot – the students kept two spin bikes rotating simultaneously from 9am until 3.30pm, with each one completing an exhausting, but exhilarating, 45-minute cycle.   Their efforts paid off for the charity as they raised a whopping £655 on the day.

“I’m extremely proud of the students and was delighted to see them having fun whilst making a positive difference. I’m also incredibly grateful to the local community of Bangor who supported them by donating a total of £1,500 to the students over two days. This will go a long way in helping the charity to continue supporting those affected by cancer in Northern Ireland.”

Casia Galea, a first-year student on the Uniformed Protective Services course who participated in the fundraising concluded, “Cancer Focus is such a worthy cause and being able to help support their work has been enjoyable. I’ve made a difference to peoples’ lives while developing skills and trying new things.”
