The Savoy Educational Trust has awarded South Eastern Regional College (SERC) a grant of £7,233 for a food and sustainability project.
The Savoy Educational Trust supports education, training and skills development in hospitality. They award grants to projects that enhance skills, knowledge and opportunities for students and professionals, driving positive change for individuals, communities and the hospitality sector.
The project the Savoy Educational Trust grant supports will see SERC train culinary arts students to transform surplus food into frozen meals for local food banks, which will help tackle food poverty and waste while enhancing students’ skills.
SERC Programme Development Manager Kim Godsman comments, “Since 2020, SERC has been actively combating food poverty through a project that combines culinary arts education with charitable outreach. This project helps educate food bank users on meal preparation using staple ingredients, while also providing students with valuable hands-on learning experiences, such as preparing meals for large-scale events for local food banks. With this grant, SERC can enter a new phase of this project, collaborating with local farms and businesses to make use of surplus food to help create nutritious frozen meals for food bank users. This interconnected approach not only benefits the local community but also prepares students for careers in the culinary field, equipping them with practical culinary skills and experience.”
Student training for the project begins this January.
