Students from South Eastern Regional College (SERC) recently got a real-world insight into what happens to wastewater after it leaves our homes and streets during a site visit to Antrim Wastewater Treatment Works.
The Level 3 Civil Engineering students from SERC’s Lisburn Campus, followed the waste water process, on arrival at Antrim Wastewater Treatment Works, to screening and biological treatment, right through to the safe discharge.
Kyle Mulholland, Lecturer in Construction and the Built Environment said, “The visit tied directly into the students’ study of Public Health Engineering. It’s not shiny or glamorous, but the Treatment Works is the kind of infrastructure that keeps society healthy and rarely gets the credit or recognition it deserves.
“Site visits like this one highlight that engineering isn’t hypothetical, it is happening in the background every single day, and someone needs to design, build and maintain it. As one student put it, ‘You don’t appreciate how much engineering goes into something as ordinary as flushing a toilet until you see what happens to waste water.’”
Huge thanks to the team in Antrim for hosting a most informative site visit for the students.
