Securing a new role in the Northern Health and Social Care Trust (the Trust) provided the motivation for Bushmills man Adam McLean to pursue alternative qualifications to support a change in career direction. Adam is currently completing the Level 3 Pharmacy Technician course at SERC’s Holywood Campus.
Adam, (32), who has a Higher National Diploma in Business, worked in retail management for several years before deciding he wanted to change. He said, “When I joined the Trust, I worked in the role of Assistant Technician Officer (ATO), and I completed a NVQ 2 in Pharmacy Dispensing at SERC’s Lisburn Campus. Although I enjoyed the job, I was keen to progress. I spoke to my colleagues who were Band 4 and 5 Pharmacy Technicians, they were really helpful, and it was through them I heard about the Level 3 Pharmacy Technician course, also at SERC. After a little research, I spoke to my line manager who encouraged and supported me to apply for the course.
Adam continued, “Studying part-time is very different from studying full-time. You do have to be organised and keep up with the work – it does require a high level of dedication and commitment, and it has been a challenge to navigate full-time work with part-time studies on a demanding course. However, I have been able to put theory into practice in my day-to-day role in the pharmacy. I enjoy the variety of classes including the chemistry, biology and manufacturing elements of pharmaceutical studies.
“My experience of SERC has been very positive - my tutors are helpful and easy to approach if I am having any issues and the whole classroom environment is very encouraging. It has been great to meet so many people from all over Northern Ireland and to learn about the different settings for pharmacy roles.”
Speaking about his career ambitions, Adam added, “When I complete the course, I hope to secure a Pharmacy Technician Band 4 role in my local hospital. Ideally, I would like to work in the busy Accident and Emergency Department. I will continue my studies by completing my Accuracy Checking Technician (ACT) training in house, equipping me for a more senior role.”
Adam concluded, “I would recommend the course to anyone who enjoys a challenge, is self-disciplined and would like to progress in their pharmacy career. I have found the support of my tutors, fellow classmates and colleagues in my workplace, key elements in helping me to succeed in the course. Overall, it has been a great pathway for learning and developing knowledge and skills in the classroom, and hands-on in the workplace.”
SERC offers real learning for real life. Applications are still open, and places are still available on some courses commencing September 2025.
