South Eastern Regional College (SERC) continues to develop our successful partnerships with businesses, with the introduction of Calor Bio LPG renewable gas at the college’s Holywood Campus Zero Carbon Centre.
This fuels a water heating system which, apart from supplying the training units, is available for students on SERC’s professional skills courses to learn and practise on real-life technology.
Viewing the Zero Carbon Centre facilities on a recent visit, Richard Alexander, Head of Sustainable Fuels at Calor, said,
“We are delighted to partner with SERC on the Zero Carbon Centre. Our BioLPG renewable gas is already helping businesses and communities reduce their carbon footprint, and this project shows how it can also support skills development for the next generation of energy professionals.”
Stephen McGreevy, SERC Lead Business Manager, commented,
“SERC is committed to developing the workforce needed to deliver net zero targets. Specialised training spaces demonstrate the use of effective, sustainable energy systems, and the addition of Calor Bio LPG is an important contribution to SERC’s portfolio of courses. The SERC Holywood Campus is just one example of the college’s commitment to improved sustainability. Here and at the professional skills centre at Dundrod, professionals get hands-on learning and at Holywood we see the technology in action, as the main building is an exemplar of a successful retrofit.”
Tirzah Pollock, an engineer with Greenview Group, has achieved new qualifications through three upskilling courses at SERC. She says the construction industry has to be ready for a greener future:
“We’re obviously in a period of transition, and at the moment most of us are still dependent on oil, coal, gas – but we are moving away from this, so there will be a need for more qualified engineers in the newer resources and the technologies to use them. The industry is aware of change and the need to adapt, but sometimes companies are at a loss as to how do this, so targeted courses are crucial.
“I think SERC is ahead of the game. The college is playing a really important role in the journey to net zero, as shown by the investment in the Holywood Campus Zero Carbon Centre. I want to see a greener future for the sake of the younger members of my family – in fact I don’t just want to see it, I want to be part of it!”
