This lockdown SERC is encouraging people to share with us their works of art and crafts, to inspire people to pick up a paintbrush, sewing needle or anything else that gets your creativity flowing.

Lockdown gives us the opportunity to explore new hobbies and ways to keep ourselves entertained,  as well as to show off and improve our skills. That is why this lockdown SERC is encouraging people to share with us their works of art and crafts, to inspire people to pick up a paintbrush, sewing needle or anything else that gets your creativity flowing. Whether you are a beginner or a master at your chosen art form, making something can lead to better mental wellbeing, as well as being a fun hobby, so let’s get creative!

This week we are featuring a furniture project made by Kelvin McGreeghan, SERC Lecturer in Engineering - School of Engineering and Computing.

Kelvin comments, "I was first given these skids by a friend, skids are used to transport heavy goods on so that a pallet truck can be used to manoeuvre them."

"The skids are simply a softwood, but they measure a useful 65mmx 65mm x 12mm long. Initially I chopped them up in to logs for the stove, to keep us warm over the winter. I decided to make a storage unit out of the skids to hold the firewood and keep it tidy, and that’s when I realised that was more useful for furniture or other projects. So, I sketched out the new project designated 'Chairzilla'. It needed to be strong, it needed to be tall, but most of all it needed to be funny."

"And with a bit of hammering and bashing it was ready and let me tell you it’s mega."

If you have any paintings, crafts, sewing projects or any other creative and artistic things you would like to share, please contact cdonaldson@serc.ac.uk.
