Domestic Violence Awareness Day is a global campaign aimed at raising awareness and taking action to end domestic violence and gender-based abuse. Domestic abuse can take different forms, including physical abuse, sexual abuse, financial abuse, coercive and controlling behaviour, gaslighting/emotional abuse, digital/online abuse and forced marriage.

Individuals, organisations, and communities are encouraged to come together to advocate for a world free from domestic violence. The college will be supporting staff by raising awareness through the development of a domestic abuse policy.

There are various support services available for domestic abuse victims, including helplines, emotional support, legal assistance, and safety planning resources. Key support services include:

  • National Domestic Abuse Helpline – Operated by Refuge, this helpline is available 24/7 at 0808 2000 247. The helpline offers confidential, non-judgemental support and can help you find local services, including refuges and legal advice.
  • Women’s Aid – Provides resources for survivors, including safety planning and support for children affected by domestic abuse. They also offer a supportive community for survivors to connect and to share experiences.
  • Victim Support – If you need to speak to someone, call the free 24-hour support helpline: 0808 1689 111.
