Ahead of enrolment 10-13 August, watch out for some inspirational stories from students who are set to be part of the next generation of professionals following their studies at SERC.
A career in the Health and Social Care sector always seemed to be on the cards for Ellen Young who came to the college to study Level 3 Health and Social Care and later HNC in Applied Sciences (Biology).
Ellen (20) from Ballynahinch completed her Level 3 Health and Social Care course in 2019, upon completion of the course Ellen took a year out and began working for the NHS.
Ellen said, “Taking a year out inspired me and helped me make my decision. Working in the health service was very rewarding and enjoyable.
“I have always had an interest in health, having medical conditions that required me to receive support from a Dietician so after my year working in the health service I decided that I wanted to become a Dietitian. This is when I looked at SERC’s HNC Applied Science offering. Completing the Applied Science course has allowed me to gain the qualifications required to meet the entry requirements for the BSc (Hons) Dietetics programme.”
Ellen added, “SERC’s careers advisers were fantastic in helping me find the most suitable route which would allow me to pursue my university and future career goals.
“I have a placed confirmed to study Human Nutrition & Dietetics in Cardiff Metropolitan University starting September 2021. After I finish my degree, I wish to practice as a Dietitian in a hospital setting and I hope to specialise in an area of dietetics that is very close to my heart.”
Speaking about SERC Ellen said “When I was looking for my next step in education following my year out I knew SERC was the right place for me to continue my studies because of my previous experience at the college.
Ellen concluded “To any prospective learner considering SERC, especially those looking to study the HNC in Applied Science (Biology), you won't be disappointed and the teaching staff go above and beyond.
“I would recommend SERC to anyone. No matter what their plans are, SERC will always have an opportunity for everyone. They are very supportive and dedicated to their students.”
