SERC has secured £7,330 funding from the Crescent Purchasing Consortium to create Zen Zones for students at the College.
The funding will help create dedicated indoor and outdoor spaces for mental health and relaxation for students with special education needs and disabilities (SEND) on the College’s Newtownards Campus as well as an outdoor space for Bangor Campus.
Kieran McKenna, Head of Collaboration and Transformation Projects said, “This initiative addresses the unique challenges SEND students face. In recent years, mental health issues have increasingly gained attention, particularly in the educational context. By developing Zen Zones, SERC aims to foster an environment that supports emotional well-being and relaxation amid the bustling campus life.”
Kieran added, “The design of the Zen Zones will prioritise accessibility and sensory-friendly features. The indoor space will include soft lighting, comfortable seating, and quiet corners with natural elements, such as plants and water features, will further enhance the soothing atmosphere.”
The outdoor areas will offer distinct benefits for the mental health of students to include a sensory area, a quiet zone, a relaxation area, and a mobile phone-free area to encourage social interaction among students. Being outdoors and surrounded by fresh air is intended to create a calming effect, helping to reduce feelings of anxiety and depression.
The Zen Zones will aim to foster a sense of community and support among students, creating a space where students can come together, share their experiences, and support one another to help combat feelings of isolation and loneliness. Students will have the opportunity to connect with their peers, reinforcing the understanding that they are not alone in their struggles.
Work on the Zen Zones is expected to commence this summer for completion for the new academic year in September 2025.
