Recently students from Skills for your Life (SFYL) from all campuses took part in an Inter-Campus Media and Independent Skills competitions.

SFYL is a course designed for students who seek a new opportunity after their compulsory education and aims at providing students with qualifications that will help them gain employment.
The competitions were through Inclusive Skills which offer stretch and challenge as they build links between colleges, training providers and local and national businesses to showcase the skills of young people with learning difficulties and disabilities.
The Media competition which involved the TFS Level 1 Skills for Your Life students from Bangor and Downpatrick where they had to design a poster for a film in teams of three. The genre and title of the film was only made available to the students at the start of the competition. Students had to design their poster by drawing out their design and then producing a digital version on the computer.
The Independent Skills competition which included students from the Job Club (SEN) students from Downpatrick, Lisburn and Newtownards campuses. This involved the students independently shopping for ingredients for a healthy breakfast at a local super market.
After some tough decisions from the judges in each competition the list of winners were announced by Director of Strategic Planning, Quality and Support, Heather McKee:
Inter-campus media competition:
1st place was awarded to the team of Oliva Austin, Robyn Jack and Jessica Palmer.
2nd place was awarded to the team of Marc McDonnell, Tyia Laverty and Nadine Sharwin.
3rd place was awarded to the team Clayton Sutcliff, Brandon Hughes and Amy Long
Inter-campus independent skills competition:
1st place – Sophie MacNeill
2nd Place – Conor Bassett
3rd Place – Aodhan McConnell
Runner up – Daniel Ardis
Runner up – Jordan Hanna
Heather McKee said that “I and the other judges were very impressed with all the students who took part in the competition and we really had to analyse the criteria to pick a clear winner. All the work produced was excellent and all should be very proud.”
Out of the students taking part the top two teams in the media and the top two independent skills competitors will now take part in the Inter-College competition at Belfast Met College on 25 April.
We wish them all the very best of luck.
